About The Burns Companies

Since 1972, with a beginning as a design-build firm, The Burns Companies have provided high quality real estate development consulting services for the single and multi-family residential, retail, commercial and industrial real estate sectors. Our staff of LEED Accredited Professionals will help you maximize efficiencies and sustainable practices, and help to minimize environmental impacts on your real estate assets. Our goal is to help our clients make the best and most cost effective decisions throughout their real estate projects. We remove the daily management burden from our clients and become the primary contact for all parties, driving the execution of a wide range of project types.

The Burns Companies provides financial analysis and reporting for all property development projects including cost reporting, budgeting, funding requests, and payment tracking. In addition we provide all project management, consulting and advisory services for our property development clients, and institutional owners.

About The Founder, Andrew Burns, LEED AP

Andrew Burns has over 34 years of experience in the property development business. After receiving a degree in architecture, Burns successfully owned and operated a residential design-build company for more than 18 years.  He left residential construction to pursue creating two property development consulting businesses designed to serve private, corporate, and institutional property owners exclusively.

Burns is currently an active member with:

  • CMAA (Construction Management Association of America)
  • CSI (Construction Specifications Institute)
  • ULI (Urban Land Institute)
  • USGBC (US Green Building Council)

Burns is a sought after leader and expert in his field, and takes great pride in helping his clients increase their asset wealth and profits in their respective businesses. Andrew has worked with large institutional investors such as UBS, ING, and Aetna, as well as highly recognized companies in various construction projects such as Safeway Stores, Sears, Marriott Hotels, and more.

Mary P. Devine, Senior Project Manager

Ms. Devine joined The Burns Companies in 1995 and today has some 15 years of experience managing ground-up construction projects as well as major renovations and restorations. After serving as Assistant Director of Student Teaching at Boston College, Ms. Devine served as a research assistant at the Rand Corporation in Santa Monica, California.


For 14 years Ms. Devine served as Vice President-Treasurer for J.M. Devine Company, Inc. – a manufacturers’ representative of nondestructive testing equipment. Her responsibilities included inside and outside sales in a territory consisting of the six New England states, office management, customer service, corporate record keeping, accounts payable and receivable and payroll.


Ms. Devine has managed the completion of some of our most sensitive projects involving occupied properties that require close contact and coordination with property managers, occupants, ownership, and inspection officials. Ms. Devine has received numerous commendations from our clients for her thoughtfulness and good judgment.

John V. Downie, AIA, LEED AP

Mr. Downie has been a consultant to The Burns Companies since 1996 providing services in interior and exterior design involving a number of project types, property types and end-user needs. He is licensed to practice Architecture in both California and Massachusetts – and he is a LEED Accredited Professional. Shortly after graduating Mr. Downie joined the prestigious firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in their Houston office. At Skidmore, Mr. Downie coordinated technical and design aspects of a major bank cafeteria and executive dining facility, and was a design team member for two office tower projects of 35 and 70 stories.


After a stint with the firm of MW Steele Group Architects in California, Mr. Downie ran his own firm in San Diego for several years before moving to Boston to work at the well regarded firm of DiMella Shaffer Associates. At DiMella Shaffer Mr. Downie managed the architectural processes, from design through construction, of a wide range of projects in senior living, multiunit housing, interiors, as well as new construction and historic renovation. Mr. Downie supervised design teams, engineers and consultants, maintained relationships with contractors, owners, building officials and end-users. He developed firm protocols for integration of sustainable building techniques and promoted the firm through speaking engagements at national conferences. Mr. Downie is an organized leader of complex, award-winning projects and of diverse teams of architects, designers, engineers, consultants, contractors, owners, neighborhood groups, local governments, and federal funding agencies.

Dorothy Regan, LEED AP, MCPPO

Ms. Regan joined The Burns Companies in 1993 and today has over 30 years of experience managing ground-up construction projects as well as major renovations and restorations. Ms. Regan is certified by the National Association of Housing & Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) as a HUD certified housing manager, and by the US Green Building Council as a LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP). Ms. Regan is a qualified Massachusetts Certified Public Purchasing Official (MCPPO) – a program that promotes excellence in public procurement.


As past Executive Director of the Needham Housing Authority, Ms. Regan was responsible for supervision of all operations and managed the completion of a multi-million dollar Federal Turnkey complex of 76 units -- 50% for handicapped persons – from approved application through construction. The project was delivered on-time and within the established budgets. Ms. Regan is one of few women who holds a Commonwealth of Massachusetts Un-Restricted Construction Supervisors License – and she has held this distinction for over 20 years.
